The Crepelato | Gelato DFAT Experience

I just couldn’t get enough of Crepelato | Gelato in Davao City

So when I learned that they’re part of DFAT 2011, I was drooling with excitement

The biggest surprise was that we will be treated for a snack treat

At their new branch in Davao NCCC Mall — awesome!!!

The place might be bigger but you will still feel the same ambience

Dedicated and swift service, Great Crepes, Pastries and Cakes

Superb Gelatos — home-made to ice-cream perfection

Hey their ice-cream are made of healthy stuff so chill about the diet

And I’m not talking about their great viand offerings yet

That will be another stomach-filling story to tell

Ranchero Davao Rocks DFAT 2011

This is actually my second DFAT experience

And I’m sure glad that I found time to join this year’s DFAT edition

I’m not a big fan of beaches so I excused myself from the Samal Island Tour

But I wouldn’t miss lunch especially if Ranchero’s is hosting

A gazillion thanks to Paolo and Michael Sunglao for the support

A visit to any Ranchero is always a pleasurable experience

We were immediately treated to their Cream Dory Sinigang sa Miso (225.00)

Cameras immediately started clicking as each blogger tried to get their best shot

When it was time to serve the soup, it has gone semi-cold

And sinigang should always be served hot to get the sourness working perfectly

Anyhow I discovered that Dory can be a good sinigang alternative

Ranchero is known for its famed Baby Back Ribs (475.00)

So dining at Ranchero without ordering this staple viand is a no-no

As expected, this one delivered a wallop of a punch — taste-wise

The meat may appear charred but it has retained its delicious juiciness

Its sauce gave it an added zest making for one perfect meal

Then there was their Garlic Chicken (395.00)

Crispy on the outside but overly tender and juicy on the inside

The dominant flavor of garlic could make your mouth water

The thin slices of garlic were a hit as we scrambled to get them

I suggest though that they use kalamansi and toyo as dip

This Pinoy innovation called Lumpiang Hubad (225.00) is a must-order

It is served without the usual lumpia-wrap thus the name “hubad”

For your wrap, you have to get a lettuce leaf and put in the filling

The sidings of crushed peanuts, diced garlic and their special sauce completes your lumpia

The freshness of the lettuce complimented the sauteed mixture of vegies and ground meat

Another favorite of mine is Crispy Pata

And Ranchero’s version did not disappoint

We were all eyeing the crispy skin and when it was time to eat – KARAMBOLA talaga!

What intrigued me was the black-colored dip which tasted sweet

Since it worked fine with the crispy pata, I didn’t anymore mind what it was made of

I have to totally thrown my DIET out of the window

The array of food sponsors lined up for this edition of DFAT is top caliber

A welcome dinner hosted by Yellow Fin Seafood Restaurant wowed us all

The sumptuous preparation of their top selling viands was uber satisfying

We got a load of their Yellow Fin delicacies…

Adobong Tuna Buntot, Grilled Tuna Belly, Fresh Tuna Kinilaw

And the food just kept coming

Imbao Soup, Greaseless Chicken, Lechong Kawali and Laing

I was in Binge-Eating Heaven!

To top it all — Service was A-plus and fit for royalty!

And to think we are still on Day Zero of DFAT 2011

I’ve always love Zamboanga City. Every visit means experiencing something different. I love Zamboanga for its rustic appeal yet you can feel its economic dynamism. Moreso, I love Zamboangaenos for they are more welcoming and malambing. This is my second visit this year and as always I have enjoyed my stay. A visit to Zamboanga would not be complete without shopping at the Barter Trade Center. Products from Malaysia and Indonesia are sold here tax-free. Pasonanca Park and the Boys’ Scout Jamboree Camp are must-visits. And there’s the old Lantaka Hotel by the bay and Camp Pilar where the miraculous image of the Blessed Virgin Mary is enshrined. And of course, the food. It is always a delight to savor Zamboanga’s food offerings. Here’s what’s in store for you, faithful readers, if you intend to visit Asia’s Latin city soon…

Sea crabs galore – prepared simply by steaming

The Alavar sauce was served separately

Only in Zamboanga that Curacha is available all-year round

Be careful of the sharp shell of the curacha

Kitang (Spotted Butter Fish) grilled to perfection

The fish meat was so juicy that I almost consumed it all by myself

Roti Bread ala Zamboanga

This is an original Malaysian recipe that’s oh-so-yummy

Beef Kulma (or Curma) is curry-based viand

Inspired by our Malaysian neighbors, this one’s not for the faint-hearted

Chicken Pianggang is a spicy Tausug viand also called as Blackened Chicken

It turns black not because it was burnt but because of the special spices used to prepare it

Adobong Pusit na Puti has always been my favorite

This one’s really tender and tasted so good

Spicy Pansit Bihon Guisado that will surely tickle your fancy

And I thought nothing can surprise me anymore

Super Bilao Grill to-die-for

Try this one for a group of five individuals – Sulit talaga!

Ensaladang talong is the best balancer for any grilled seafood

But try the manggang hilaw ensalada with itlog na maalat

Carolina’s Grill serves the best Beef Kulma, Chicken Pianggang, Spicy Pancit Bihon Guisado and Roti Bread. The best time to dine is from 6:00 onwards. They are located at Baliwasan, Moret and may be contacted at 926-9141.

Country Chicken Restaurant offers the Super Bilao Grill which includes pork chorizo, calamares, spare ribs, bangus, itlog maalat, tortang talong and fried chicken. All for PhP900.00++. Add PhP250.00 for a mean serving of Crispy Pata. They’re located along the Pasonanca Park Complex. For reservations, contact 0908-899-6826.

Alavar’s Restaurant is probably one of the oldest restaurants in Zamboanga City. Their Crab and Curacha viands would not be complete without the popular Alavar Sauce. Try their Grilled Kitang and Ensaladang Talong combination too. Alavar’s is along Don Alfaro Street, Tetuan. Make your reservations at 991-2483.

Lake Sebu Is Tilapia Kingdom

Hindi pa sikat ang Lake Sebu noon nung una kong napuntahan

I was still working with PCIBank then when I first got wind of the place

Wala pang ibang resort noon kundi Estares Lodge

Ang ibinibida nila about Lake Sebu is its TILAPIA

I vividly remember that we were house sa parang attic

Dun kami lahat natulog sa uber lamig na gabi

And siempre for two days, bumaha ng tilapia ever so much

That time, prito and inihaw lang ang usong istilo ng pagluto nito

And what I love about Lake Sebu’s tilapia is that hindi lasang-latak

Manamis-namis ito and talagang malamang-malaman

Sa muli kong pagbalik sa Lake Sebu, marami nang nabago

Isa na dito ang pagkilala dito bilang TILAPIA KINGDOM

Ang mga sumusunod na litrato ang patunay na akma ang titulong ito

Maglaway kayo, faithful readers…

Koronadal’s Bright Spot: SaBalai Bistro

Something’s happening in Koronadal City these days

This once sleepy town is experiencing a lifestyle and leisure boom

Coffee shops, cafes, restaurants and resto-bars are sprouting here and there

One of them is Sa Balai Bistro, a quaint abode that offers great pasta and pizza

Owner and Proprietor Carlo Ebeo transformed their old residence into a fab bistro

His collections from his travels is displayed around the place

But it makes for one cozy venue for anybody who wants to enjoy good food

GESM picks are the Guacamole Pizza with its oh-so-yummy avocado toppings and their Linguine in hot Persian sauce

Now it these pictures doesn’t cause you to drool, I don’t know what else will…

Easy Sunday Cooking: Prawns Sauteed in Garlic

Last night I dreamt about cooking in my little pantry

When I woke up today the urge to cook was so strong that I just have to do it

It was a good thing that I still have prawns in the fridge

Oliver came to mind because he loves prawns

And it’s my Mommy’s Birthday today too

So there I was on an easy Sunday morning – cooking like mad

Whatever I had in my little pantry, I used. Hear are the ingredients:

20 pieces medium-sized raw prawns
1 sachet 15 grams Star Margarine
4 tablespoons Palm Oil
10 cloves minced garlic

Anyone can cook. This is how I did it…

Wash the prawns in running water. Set aside for excess water to drain.
Crush the garlic cloves and minced (slice in small pieces) them.
Heat the frying pan and pour the palm oil.
Set at medium heat then add the margarine.
Sautee the minced garlic to golden brown.
Get the sauteed garlic from the frying pan and set aside.
Cook the prawns in the frying pan over medium heat for about 3 minutes.
Continue to stir the prawns to avoid overcooking.
Add half of the sauteed garlic while stirring.
Cook for a minute at low heat.
Transfer the sauteed prawns in a serving dish and sprinkle the remaining garlic over the prawns.

Gusteau’s Food Haus Never Fails To Impress

Dining at Gusteau’s Food Haus has always been a terrific experience

When owner Alan Lopez decided to move their restaurant at Sun City Complex, I was doubly excited

Now dining has become even more convenient and comfortable

Since their opening, one will notice a steady flow of diners at Gusteau’s

No wonder, Alan is smiling from ear to ear

Gusteau’s menu is very basic yet each viand is a delight

Their Crispy Dory Fillet is a must-order

This one’s fried to crispy-perfection yet the dory meat remained tender and juicy

Gusteau’s also made sure that there’s a Tuna Viand in their menu

Their Garlic Tuna Belly is crispy-fried just right

The garlic aroma is not too strong but it gives it the right kick

There’s their Spicy Prawn sauteed in olive oil with minced garlic

Any food-tripper who is a seafood lover will want this dish

These are really sweet-tasting prawns and Gusteau’s didn’t put this to waste

And of course a visit to Gusteau’s won’t be complete without their Ocean King Crabs

This is one dish that Alan himself prepares using his own concoction of herbs and spices

Be ready to use your hands as this one’s gonna be a messy affair

Gusteau’s crabs are from Surigao and really FAT and LOADED

I am simply out of words to describe this particular viand

Go experience Gusteau’s Ocean King Crabs for yourself!
