Kalilangan Festival Photo Contest Top Three Best Pictures

1st Best Picture by Dino Kintanar

We’re proud to announce the winners of the Kalilangan Festival 2010 Photo Contest. Out of the more than 250 entries, the judges chose twenty-five consolation winners and the three best pictures in the competition. We had difficulty in selecting the winning photos since there were just too many of them. Entries for the Street Dancing Category overshoot our expectations – it reached almost 150 pictures. This was where most of the selections came from. We noticed that the other categories had lackluster entries thus adjustments had to be made as far as the number of winners per category.

This picture by Dino Kintanar was a unanimous choice by the judges. It encompassed everything that Kalilangan Festival is all about: Fun, vibrant, colorful and dynamic.

2nd Best Picture by Paul Fernandez Llanos

Seemingly subdued but this photo captured the rich cultural heritage of Gensan. Paul Fernandez Llanos almost did not make it to this event. Good thing he did — his shot tells an important story.

3rd Best Picture by Ronald V. Velasquez

Not your typical street dancing photo which the judges noticed immediately. The original Master of Photography captured the fading light from the sky and with the available light it painted a beautiful rendition of the dance.

The first-ever Queen of Mindanao Festivals, Madonna Galang had to take over as Gensan’s bet in lieu of Miss Gensan Astrid Hernandez who was busy with her nursing studies. In this photo, Dong Pading once again proved that he has an eye for beauty (or beautiful ladies).

Mutya ng Tampakan almost won the crown because of her witty remarks and young lady’s charm. Jonathan Lara’s shot was a judges’ favorite.

Dabawenya Crowned Binibining Gandang Hari 2010

Right from her introductory line, Macmac already caught everyone’s attention

“If being sexy is a crime then by all means put me to jail!”

From thereon, Macmac was on her way to the coveted crown

Winning most of the minor awards

He bested nine other equally beautiful gays

So beautiful that any real lady will die of insecurity

Her being a veteran of Gay Pageants certainly was a plus

He glided like a swan onstage

Never minding the humid evening

She just smiled and waved and sashayed

Gensan resident Dandan won as 1st runner up

He is of Filipino-German descent

At first glance, Dandan looked like a young Cherie Gil

He would have been a shoo-in for the crown

But he buckled during the interview portion

Another Gensan resident, Jade Michelle, won as 2nd runner up

Jade is from Barangay Calumpang and he came with her coterie of supporters

He was one of the most applauded finalists

All the other finalists obviously prepared for the pageant

They moved like real ladies

And they are flawlessly beautiful in their own right

Having survived the grueling pageant

Makes them all winners already

The Grandest Street Dancing Competition Ever

In the many years that I have handled the Festivals of Gensan, last Saturday’s Street Dancing Competition was a first in so many things…

For the first time, I walked the length of Pioneer Avenue giving out instructions to the marshals and parade participants. Despite the searing heat, I didn’t complain. I was uber excited.
Both lanes were filled with the colorful contingents. I have never filled Pioneer Avenue with such pomp and pageantry.
If the lanes were filled with the dancers – the parking area was filled with people! Spectators from all sizes – they were all there.
I have not seen so many photographers with their expensive cameras in tow. Their presence created more excitement for the participants.
Lastly, I left Pioneer only after the contingents started marching their way to the Oval Plaza stage. It warms the heart when you see the participants dancing with gusto.

These pictures taken by my friend and fellow blogger, Arnel Marco Oclarit, not only depict the vibrancy of this year’s Kalilangan Festival. It brings together our aspirations for a better Gensan. Once again, we proved to all and sundry that if we put our acts together, nothing is impossible.

Madonna Galang was crowned as the 1st Queen of Mindanao Festivals

She bested six other ladies from different municipalities in Mindanao

Robinson’s Place Gensan played host to the Pageant

In a jam-packed atrium, the seven ladies strutted their stuff to the delight of the audience

In a glamorous and engaging pageant

Gevic Romero and Caroline Lim were crowned

Lakan at Lakambini ng Kalilangan 2010

It was a tight competition right from the start

As the candidates sashayed their best to the judges’ hearts

In the end, Gevic’s and Caroline’s answers to the final question

Sealed their fate and the crown

Earlier on, Maureen Paolo was on shopping spree

She won as Miss Talent, Best in Festival Costume and Best in Gown

Jenel Labiana, on the other hand, bagged Mr. Photogenic

Maureen and Jenel eventually won as 1st Runners-up

The best walkers of the ramp were

2nd Runners-up Sarashvati Sarkar and Dave Barbero

Sarash, a veteran of many pageants floated like a butterfly

Dave, a first-time pageant candidate, walked confidently

With great fanfare and vibrant fiesta spirit

Kalilangan Festival 2010 formally opened yesterday

Signaling Gensan’s 71st Foundation Anniversary celebration

For one week, over thirty different events will happen

There’s the much-anticipated Lakan at Lakambini Pageant

Which the organizers believe has the best crop of finalists by far

The Queen of Southern Mindanao Festivals will also add color to our fiesta

And there’s the Kadsagayan Street Dancing Competition

Where five local contingents vie for the much-coveted championship trophy

In addition to this, seven municipalities will also dance their way to 150,000 pesos

As the Festivals of Mindanao Street Dancing Competition is revived this year

What made the Grand Ceremonial Opening more memorable

Was the presence of Gensan’s leaders Mayor Jun Acharon and Rep. Darlene Custodio,

Former Rep. Lu Antonino and former Senator Franklin Drilon

Truth to tell, they have always been the source of inspiration of the organizers

But what really brought the house down was when our guests joined the dancers

And literally segued their way to everyone’s hearts

It was indeed a sight to behold and every photographer’s dream shot!

GMA 7′s Geoff Taylor, Grand winner of R U The Next Big Star dropped by

He surprised everyone by jumping from the stage and joined the contingents

He sure deserved to win – he knew what clicked with the audience

He sang a popular tune and had the people sing along with him

As nighttime came, the dancing continued

The fiesta fever was now on high gear

Infecting everyone who was at the Oval Plaza that time

Then the COUNTDOWN began

Led by Councilors Meg Santos, Ric Atendido, Nep Natividad, Vic Dante and Oco

The Grand Fireworks Display culminated the day’s event

It was one exhausting and stressful February 22

But it was worth all the effort

We invite everyone to watch all the nightly shows beginning tonight
