To celebrate its Diamond Anniversary, the Miss World franchise returned to the city where it all began. In a glamorous pageant night held at Earls Court, London, a 21-year old lady from Venezuela was crowned Miss World 2011. Miss Ivian Lunasol Sarcos Colmenares, studied in a nunnery for five years and eventually worked for a broadcasting company. Orphaned at an early age, she grew up wanting to help people who are in need. The Miss World pageant has evolved to become a beauty pageant with a cause (aptly coined as “Beauty With A Purpose”) whereby candidates must demonstrate their involvement in charity work. Completing her court are Miss Puerto Rico Amanda Perez and Miss Philippines Gwendolyn Gaille.
The theme of Beauty With A Purpose it is at the heart of Miss World, working tirelessly to raise funds for many good causes over the years. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been donated to local and international organisations in aid of disadvantaged children the world over. (source: Miss World website)
