Does It Make C.E.N.T.S.?

The week that Anthony Pangilinan was in Gensan was Hell Week for me.  Anthony is the celebrity-turned-inspirational-guru and husband of actress Maricel Laxa.  Thanks to Planters Bank’s SME Speaker Series, he was in town to speak about Putting Values to Business.  Anthony and I are both members of AIESEC during our college years and have not seen each other for some time now.  Listening to him was not only inspiring – I learned a lot too.

Part of his talk caught my attention.  He said that if you find yourself facing a blank wall and don’t know what to do with your life, then the thing to do is ask yourself:  “Does it make C.E.N.T.S.?”  It doesn’t matter whether you’re a businessman, a student or in-between-jobs.  This question actually works for everyone.  C.E.N.T.S. stand for:

CONTRIBUTION. Ask yourself:   “Have I contributed something to this endeavor?”  Say, for example, you’re a salesperson.  Have you had preparation to become one?  Have you done what it takes to deliver the goods?  You don’t just say that you’re part of a sales team and rest of your laurels.  You have to actually produce and contribute.

EXCELLENCE. You really don’t need to excel in so many things.  Just make sure that you excel in the field you are in today and that you continue to develop your skills by constantly learning and innovating.  You may now be is sales but you actually excel in product innovation.  Then its time to shift roles and excel in your identified expertise.

NATURAL TALENT. Education and training produce many successful people.  Just imagine when your natural talent is further sharpened and enhanced by training and actual exposure.   And we are talking about being a natural leader who has got the knack for managing people and resources.

TURN-ON. Do you have the Passion for the things you do?  It is important that you really like what you are doing because it will show in the end.  When something turns you on, it’s like a light bulb switch that energizes you.  You give your all.   You just give your best.  People will start recognizing the kind of stuff you are made of eventually and that’s when things will come up roses.

SPIRIT-LED. What I liked most about making C.E.N.T.S. is this part.  We may be the best in our field.  We may be the most successful.  We may be earning accolades, left and right.  But when we do not recognize that a Supreme Being is responsible for everything then it will all come to naught.  When you are spirit-led in the things you do, chances are that you know what is just and fair.

Now evaluate yourself.  Based on the each item above, rate yourself from one to ten, with ten being the highest.  If you rate high then you’re on the right track.  If you got low scores on each item, work on it.  If you got a low score over-all, then you might want to consider another career that best suits your passion.  Godspeed.
