Cebu is probably the best source for my comfort foods
Eh kasi naman eleven years din akong tumira dun
So basically sa Cebu nabuo ang love affair ko with food
Napagusapan na natin ang Ding How Dimsum
This time, let’s talk about Ngo Hiong at Puso

Ngo Hiong is actually deep-fried (to a crisp) lumpia
They are stuffed with meat and vegetables
They become the heavenly roll when dip in spicy sauce
Hindi sya ngo hiong kung walang maanghang at malasang sawsawan

Puso is a heart-shape stuffing filled with rice
The wrap is actually young coconut leaves
Ang tawag dito sa ingles ay Hanging Rice
Puso is a favorite of busy and mobile eaters
They are less messy kasi and easy to dispose
At madali ring i-dip sa anumang sawsawan
They are great partners for any barbecued item

I remember buying our ngo hiong from a friend’s store in Guadalupe
Unahan talaga kami lalo na kapag mainit pa ang ngo hiong
Keber na nga kung hindi nakapaghugas ng kamay eh
Ngo Hiong and Puso are both affordable then
Ngayon even with twenty-five pesos, busog ka na
This time, I tried this carenderia along Pelaez Street
Malapit ito sa Elicon Hotel which is near University of San Carlos
As expected, pig-out uli ako with my comfort food
Uber sa sarap talaga and it brought back many good memories.
Mega-tulo ang pawis. Siksikan sa carenderia. Maliit na upuan.
Memory recall.
Memory restored.

the name “ngohiong” is derived from a powder used in making the wrappers… the powder’s brand is “ngo hiong”… this was what i got from filipino-chinese folks… but regardless of the historical hullabaloo, ngohiong will always be a comfort food to cebuanos, and to those “adopted” by cebu – just like us, SIR ORMZ… cheers!!!
