Political Will Hunting

What ails the country?  We have a workaholic economist for a president yet nothing really positive has really changed since we kicked out the alcoholic former-actor out of office.  The peace and order situation has gone from bad to worst.  On the political front, the Comelec, the Ombudsman and the Sandigan Bayan have become the nation’s laughing stock.   Alas, even the halls of the Philippine Senate have been turned into a carnival.  The last remaining bastion of decency, which is the Supreme Court, has become this nation’s interpreter of the innuendos of politicians who are lawyers and lawyers who are politicians.  Of late, the opposition is so divided such that a former President has been contemplating to run again in 2010.  Woo to President Arroyo.  But then again, she knew these were coming.  With a broad coalition as her base of support, she had to compromise even her ideals.  This became her Achilles Heel – her weakness.  Her political foes ganged up on her – no, thanks to political blunders and scandals that abound .  The remaining months will be her only chance to redeem her presidency.  It’s not your husband.  It’s not Erap or the opposition.  It’s political will, Mrs. President.  It’s time to grab center stage and set the course of the nation.

I think we are already engulfed in a quagmire of mud with the kind of political practice we have in our country. We are even in a dilemma on how to get out from it. Even we elect the holiest man in this country, still he/she will be plunged into the pit because of patronage politics. Other people will be spending millions for your candidacy and bait you when you are already in the position. There was even a radical political author who once scribbled with this idea – “In order to straighten the social order, better kill the rotten ones and replace them with the young.” But, that is not the answer either. We need to have a revolution coming from the innermost corners of our hearts. One person did that 2,000 years ago.
